May Meeting: May 27th, 2004
Location: Wilson’s 4925 New Centre Drive
Wilmington, NC
Speaker: Chapter Awards
Sponsor: TBA
President's Message:
Tim Walsh
April/May 2004
Welcome to our newest members since our last
newsletter: E. Paige Benson,
Jane Burnett, Frank Garrison, Parks Griffin, David Lavely, Lance Rucks,
Brandon Sproles, Betty Tacozza and Lance Rucks. This brings our Coastal membership to 73, the largest
ever. Thanks to those who share
the vision and have invited others to join us.
We’ve timed this newsletter as a last minute reminder
about the golf tournament this Thursday, May 6th at Castle Bay in
Hampstead. Our charity this year
is the Tileston Outreach Health Clinic in Wilmington and as of our last board
meeting, Tim Cook has us on track to have one of the best turnouts ever. We can always use more players and it
won’t be too late if you act quickly.
Call Tim at 392-3371 to get last minute information. Thanks to all of our sponsors for
their generosity.
We’ve had some great speakers at our last couple of
meetings. Two representatives
from NHRMC in January and February, and our April joint meeting with WAIFA
featured our state lobbyist Robert Paschal. If you haven’t already put us on your calendar for May 27th,
please do so now. As we await
the results of our latest Pacesetter submission we will be honoring new
RHU’s, membership recruiters, HUPAC donors and LPRT qualifiers. This will be our last get together
for the “association year” and if you haven’t found the time yet this year,
please do so now. Don’t worry
though, we will email and fax you AGAIN just to make sure you don’t forget.
Please take the time to read our other committee members’
submissions for other happenings.
I hope to see many of you at the golf tournament and ALL of you on May
27th.

L & L Notes
We had a
great Capitol Conference with great speakers. Tim, Hughes, Mel and I
attended and I must say it was the best one I have attended. How
fortunate we are to live in a country where we can meet face to face with our
legislators and express our opinions and ask them to vote either for or
against a bill. We even had a private guided tour of the Capital and
the Rotunda from Mike MacIntyre. We were able to see politics in action
as we watched a bill being voted on from the VIP section of the
chambers! That was pretty impressive.
NAHU is
very much in the center of all that is happening in Washington with any bill
on healthcare, be it Medicare, HSAs or Long Term Care. So much so that
Janet Trautwine and Tom Brudele were asked to be at the Whitehouse when the
President gave his last speech which included the Medicare Drug
bill.
HSAs are
very much on the radar screen of all those who cast a vote and seem to be
very well received. These people seem to think this is the direction we
need to go in an effort to lower the cost of health care. I think some
states have it worse than we do based on that thinking. In any event,
it is the hot topic now and most carriers will introduce an HSA in the
future if they haven't already done so.
Medicare
is another hot topic and has more to come on this one as they attempt to
lower costs and increase benefits for seniors. I predict that we will
at some point see another Medicare supplement revamping.
Tax
breaks for long term care is also being discussed again and has some
momentum. I look for this to happen at some time in the near
future.
As you
know John Kerry would like to have a government run healthcare
system. Here we go again! The Clintons tried it and it
didn't happen, lets hope that if Kerry is elected it will not happen either.
We have
to continue to support the PACs and NAHU if we want to keep our system alive
and us in business. Do your part, contribute, ask a nonmember to join
and continue to support the business we are in.
Thank
you.

We have had an exciting
last half of our "CAHU" year!
In February several members attend the Teddy Bear Ball representing
CAHU. This was a charity event for
Duke Children's Hospital. Our
annual charity golf tournament is coming up Thursday, May 6 at Castle
Bay. Proceeds go to Tileston
Medical Clinic. This is our
biggest fund raiser, please support CAHU!! Our CAHU year will end on May 27th as we have our annual
Awards Day ceremony. Again,
please come out and congratulate all these folks (you may be one of
them!). June brings National Convention...we
hope to have to have 6 members of our chapter there ...to bring home the
Pacesetter Award! It's been a
great year and we look forward to
seeing you at the golf
tournament and our last meeting of the year.
