10 Years of Excellence

The Coastal Association of Health Underwriters (CAHU) was chartered by a few Wilmington agents and carrier reps 10 years ago. Today we have grown to 75 members and are one of the most recognized and awarded small/medium chapters in the Country.

At the National Convention in Baltimore this summer, CAHU was awarded The National Pacesetter Award for the second consecutive year. This National recognition is given to local chapters who have excelled in the following areas: board involvement, political action contributions, community service, & member recruitment. We could not have gotten to where we are today without the leadership we have received from each and every one of our past CAHU Presidents. As part of our 10^th anniversary, we are going to recognize our past presidents at our first meeting of the year, September 23^rd.

Another dynamic meeting schedule has been planned this year starting with our first meeting. Robert Simes, Director of Strategic Planning and Health Information for MedCost PPO will give us detailed analysis of current and future healthcare trends. MedCost is the largest independent PPO in the State managing 850,000 member lives. If you do business with Humana, John Alden, Guardian or The Principal, you should not miss this meeting. You will be able to take valuable information from this meeting to help educate your clients.

Also, we are taking the CAHU show on the road. 20% of our members reside between Greenville and New Bern. It is difficult for these members to come to Wilmington each lunch meeting. So, as part of our mission, we are bringing a CAHU meeting to Greenville on January 12, 2005. This meeting will be in addition to our normal January 27^th meeting.

If you are not attending our monthly lunch meetings you are really missing out. Please use our 2004-2005 philosophy and get involved.

Another year is more than half over. Have you completed your CE hours for 2004? We will offer one 3 hour CE course, free or almost free, to members in 2004, and possibly another after the first of the year. We'd like to survey attendees at our September meeting to see what topics are of utmost importance to our members. See you on the 23rd!

First of all I want to thank Hughes Waren for chairing this committee for the past two years. It is no coincidence that with him at the helm, Coastal has been awarded the coveted Pacesetter Award TWICE in that same timeframe. Little does he know that he will be my secret weapon on the committee this year?

We of course will be applying for Pacesetter again this year and won’t let Hughes down. All I can ask of each committee is to help me keep track of all the documentation required of us for our submission. At our first meeting on September 23^rd you will be given a list of criteria to be judged for the award. Please help me keep accurate track of our accomplishments and points acquired for our goals. DOCUMENTATION is the key to winning this award as well as many others.

We will also be compiling documentation for the Presidential Citation and Distinguished Service Awards. More information will be supplied as we move forward with these submissions.

Thank you for the honor of accepting our Pacesetter Award in Baltimore this past June for last year’s submission. When they move to announcing the winners in the small chapter category and the first name to flash on the big screen is Coastal NC for the second year in row, the feeling is one of both relief and deep pride in all of our accomplishments throughout the year. I look forward to seeing Hughes on stage in Miami next year as he represents our CAHU family.
